Youth Education Bursary Application

Policy Statement

Council is committed to creating opportunities for young people to further education pathways, through an annual Youth Education Bursary.

Youth Education Bursary aims to encourage Alice Springs-based residents to continue to study by providing financial support.

The total annual bursary is divided into a maximum of four equal and capped amounts per recipient.

Applications are assessed by a panel and presented to Council for Elected Members to endorse.

Recipients are invited to attend the Australia Day Citizenship and Awards Ceremony where they are presented with their bursary.

To initiate any payment to the recipient, a copy of a study acceptance letter is required for TAFE and University students to Council including a study commencement date and an enrolment confirmation for secondary school.

Assessment

Nominations are assessed by a panel to ensure they meet eligibility criteria, demonstrate commitment to further education and community involvement.

Four applications that score the highest on the assessment criteria will be recommended to Council for endorsement, based on:

1. academic ability
2. educational highlights
3. motivation to succeed

Deferral of Bursary

Council acknowledges students planning to attend University or TAFE may decide to defer their enrolment. Council may consider deferral requests for bursary funds based on individual circumstances, for a maximum period of 12 months from the scheduled start date of enrolment.

Forfeit of Bursary

The bursary may be forfeited and/or repayable if the recipient:

  • cancels their enrolment; or
  • does not attend the university, TAFE or school to complete their classes/study without receiving an approved deferral.

Consideration will be given for extenuating circumstances on a case-by-case basis.
